Wanna be in a movie?
Let's make something!
I'm making a movie on Saturday! I don't know what it's going to be about yet! Wanna be in it?
I know, seems crazy, but sometimes, it just feels good to make stuff. When my friend Joe asked me to participate in this event-- the documentary challenge-- I realized it was a great opportunity to get my creative juices flowing and to be challenged in a way I have not done for a while.
There are several artists participating in this little creative experiment and Joe will be documenting us making our individual pieces. John Simpkins will be creating a painting, Dennis McGregor an "old-school" animation with his hands while Mike and Spencer from Unami Media will be creating a "new-school" animation on their computers. I will be making a one minute film. Plus, there is talk of a tap dancer. So basically, this is a documentary about artists making a film about making a film in a competition. However, the catch is that each of us, as artists, will create individual pieces that can then stand on their own. So while my film I make on Saturday will be just 1 piece in a larger film, it will also be it's own piece.
All of the artists will be creating a "piece" based on the theme and genre we are given (see guidelines here). So, ultimately that will drive what I make my own movie about and whether it will be fictional or non-fictional and they style I use to shoot it.
For example, if the theme is say "Creation", perhaps I would make a portrait/documentary movie about my friend moving into her new house, for the first time with just her and her child and creating a new space for a new future. Or maybe it is a silent fictional little movie that tells the story of 2 people who meet because they each go to eat alone at a neighborhood resteraunt and create a friendship. Who knows?!?
If you are in Bend or Portland and would be willing to be in my little movie on Saturday, then please let me know. Email me or leave a comment. I am hoping to get a number of people who are interested so then I can look at those people and use who is available to me to help me decide what I do. I mean, my friend, who just moved in next door, might not be willing, but maybe you are. So what story do I tell about you?
Sometimes I need a challenge to be inspired, simply because I need someone else to tell me where to look so I can explore it and learn something new that I might not otherwise have seen if they did not challenge me. And I think when we do this, we put that inspiration back out into the world and keep it going.
Thanks for considering being in my little movie. My goal is to post my final piece here on Monday or Tuesday next week when it is all done so you can see it!
